Twisha Sharma’s Last Rites to Take Place in Bhopal Today After Prolonged Delay

BHOPAL: The final rites of Twisha Sharma, whose death has sparked significant public and judicial attention, will be conducted in Bhopal at 5 pm on Sunday, family members confirmed.

Twisha’s cousin, Ashish Sharma, informed news agency ANI that the family had initially planned to take her mortal remains to Delhi. However, soaring temperatures and medical considerations made long-distance travel impractical. “We wanted to perform the last rites in Delhi, but it is impractical in this heat to travel so far. Due to medical reasons, it has been decided to perform the last rites in Bhopal. She will be given her final farewell at 5 pm today,” Ashish Sharma told ANI.

He further alleged that Twisha’s in-laws bore responsibility for the incident. “They (Samarth’s family) themselves are responsible for this entire incident. If they come forward with honesty, they should state the facts clearly,” he added.

The decision comes after a 12-day delay following Twisha’s death on May 12. A second post-mortem examination was underway on Sunday, conducted by a team of senior doctors from AIIMS Delhi at the direction of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Family members, including Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma and brother Major Harshit Sharma, have expressed hope that the medical board will carry out a fair and transparent examination.

The case has drawn intervention from the country’s top court. The Supreme Court has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter, titled “In Re Alleged Institutional Bias and Procedural Discrepancies in the Unnatural Death of a Young Woman at Matrimonial Home,” with a hearing scheduled for Monday before a CJI-led bench.

Meanwhile, Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, who was arrested in Jabalpur after remaining absconding for several days, was remanded to seven days of police custody by a Bhopal court on Saturday. Twisha, a resident of Noida, was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal. Her family has alleged dowry harassment and mental torture, claims that the in-laws have strongly denied.

The Madhya Pradesh government has already recommended a CBI probe into the case.
