Tripura : Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday. The senior IPS officer was rushed to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, where doctors made prolonged efforts to revive him before declaring him dead at 12:48 pm. Preliminary reports indicate that Dhankar may have died by suicide.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the cause of death. Secretary to the Chief Minister Kiran Gitte said the exact circumstances surrounding the incident would become clear only after a detailed investigation. Dr Pradip Bhowmik, a senior physician at Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, said Dhankar was brought to the emergency department at around noon with no pulse, blood pressure, body temperature or other vital signs.
The doctor added that the cause of death can only be established after a post-mortem examination. He said it was not possible to determine any underlying medical condition at the time of admission, as the officer had no detectable vital signs. Following the incident, senior police officials reached the Police Headquarters, secured the area and launched an investigation. An official statement from the Tripura Police is awaited, while the post-mortem examination is expected to determine the exact cause of Dhankar’s death.
During his tenure with the CBI, he led the agency’s investigation into the Punjab National Bank fraud case involving fugitive diamantaire Nirav Modi. He also held several senior positions in the agency, including Superintendent of Police, Deputy Inspector General, Joint Director and Additional Director. Dhankar also served as Inspector General (Personnel) in the CISF and chaired the Special Investigation Team on the 1984 anti-Sikh riots under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances of his death, and further details are awaited.
