TMC Leader Quit Borough Chairperson Post Amid Abhishek Banerjee Notice Row

Kolkata : In a development that has sparked fresh buzz in Bengal politics, Trinamool Congress councilor Debalina Biswas resigned as chairperson of Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Borough No.9 just a day after civic notices were sent to properties allegedly linked to senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.

Though Biswas stepped down from the chairperson’s post, she clarified that she would continue as the councillor of ward 74. In her resignation letter, she mentioned “party related reasons” behind the decision, but the timing of the move has naturally raised eyebrows within political circles.

The controversy began after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation reportedly issued notices over alleged construction irregularities at several properties connected to Banerjee and people close to him. Soon after the notices came to light, internal dicussions within the ruling party intensified, with many questioning how the matter was handled.

Reacting to the issue, Biswas said she has no prior information about the notices before they were served. She also stated that several of the matters being discussed were beyon her direct administrative role as borough chairperson.

Even though the Trinamool Congress has not officially connected her resignation to the notice controversy, opposition parties were quick to attack the ruling camp, claiming the episode reflects growing pressure and discomfort within the party leadership.

The incident has gained added attention because Borough No. 9 covers politically important areas of south Kolkata. With Abhishek Banerjee already facing repeated political attacks from the opposition, the sudden resignation has only deepened speculation around the developments inside the TMC.
