A five-year-old girl was found dead in the clubhouse cellar of a residential complex in Kowkoor, Telangana, hours after she went missing on Saturday.
The child, daughter of an agricultural scientist, lived with her father in the gated society. Following a complaint, police launched a search and recovered her body around 9 pm.
The suspect has been identified as Vikram, a security guard at the complex. He is accused of kidnapping and killing the girl and is alleged to have demanded Rs 20 lakh for her release. CCTV footage shows the guard with the child before the incident and following her. Investigators are examining the video to reconstruct the sequence of events and are also looking into reports that he had been moving suspiciously around the premises in the two days leading up to the disappearance.
Mobile-phone location data indicates the suspect may have travelled towards Secunderabad railway station after the incident. Bollaram police are probing the case with a focus on CCTV footage, phone records and other evidence. Malkajgiri police have formed special teams to track the accused, who remains at large, and are collecting forensic material to establish the circumstances and motive.
Residents of the complex have expressed concern about the safety of children in gated residential societies.
