The Indian Youth Congress has announced a ‘Chalo Delhi’ mobilisation for October 12, urging people to join a campaign defending the Constitution and democracy.
The youth wing described the moment as “It’s NOW or NEVER” and linked the call to the Congress-led Opposition’s allegations of electoral irregularities, referred to as “vote chori,” along with demands for accountability from the Election Commission. In its posts, the organisation accused the BJP of rigging elections with the help of a “compromised Election Commission” and called on citizens to stand up peacefully for voting rights, freedom and constitutional protections.
The group invoked Mahatma Gandhi and India’s freedom struggle, stating that the country belongs to its people and not to any political party. Its messages repeatedly emphasised the theme “For our Constitution. For our democracy. For each other.”
The announcement comes amid ongoing protests by Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. On October 8, Delhi Police detained Rahul Gandhi, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and around 90 other Opposition MPs and workers as they attempted to reach Jantar Mantar for a demonstration against the Election Commission.
On October 9, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi led an INDIA bloc delegation that submitted a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu. The delegation raised concerns about the electoral process and sought the President’s intervention as part of the broader campaign challenging the Election Commission’s handling of electoral rolls and demanding accountability from its leadership.
