New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Monday expressed concern over allegations of excessive police force against protesters, orally observing that authorities cannot resort to a lathi-charge merely because people are staging an agitation. The remarks were made by a bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant while taking up a fresh batch of petitions alleging police excesses during the recent wave of student protests across the country. Among the petitions is one filed by a group of students who claimed they were assaulted by police during the demonstrations.
The Court directed that all the petitions be listed together for hearing on Tuesday, July 28. One of the pleas also alleged that security personnel used AK-47 rifles against protesters in Siwan, Bihar. Addressing the issue, CJI Surya Kant said the Court would examine all the matters together, stressing that every citizen deserves protection and that any excesses by law enforcement must be prevented.
“There should be proper protocols. This is not confined to Delhi alone; protests have taken place in different parts of the country. Merely because there is an agitation does not justify a lathi-charge,” the Chief Justice orally observed. Earlier Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government is using extreme force, including AK-47s and pellet guns, to suppress student voices across various states.”The entire system is downright murderous against students.
News is coming in that AK-47 bullets have been fired at protesting students in Bihar, and hundreds of students have been arrested with FIRs being filed against them,” Gandhi said in his post.The 36-day Cockroach Janta Party-led agitation ended on Saturday after the government accepted key demands of the protesters and Dharmendra Pradhan resigned as Education Minister.
