‘Suhagraat Express’ Controversy: Honeymoon Themed Train Cabin Sparks Outrage, Railway Staff Suspended As Probe Begins

Mumbai: A First AC coupe on the Mumbai CSMT Balharshah Nandigram Express has landed at the centre of a nationwide controversy after videos showing the compartment decorated like a honeymoon suite went viral on social media. The coach, adorned with flower garlands, balloons and rose petals, quickly earned the nickname “Suhagraat Express”, triggering criticism over the alleged misuse of railway property and prompting swift action by the authorities.

The incident involved Train No. 11002, where a newly married couple travelled in a First AC coupe. Videos recorded inside the compartment showed elaborate decorations typically associated with wedding celebrations. As the visuals spread online, many users questioned how such decorations were allowed inside a reserved railway compartment and whether railway officials were involved.

Railway authorities initiate action
South Central Railway responded after the controversy escalated, confirming that disciplinary action had been initiated. The Travelling Ticket Examiner (TTE) on duty was suspended pending an inquiry into the incident. Railway officials said an investigation would determine whether established rules and operating procedures were violated and whether any railway personnel facilitated the decoration.

In a subsequent clarification, South Central Railway stated that the couple had privately hired an online decorator to decorate the AC coupe during their journey. According to the railway administration, the decorator entered the train without authorisation and carried out the decorations. Officials said a criminal case was registered against the contractor responsible for the unauthorised entry and decoration.

What was found inside the coach?

Videos circulating online showed the First AC compartment decorated with:

Flower garlands hanging from the walls.
Balloons fixed across the cabin.
Rose petals spread over the berth.
Decorative lighting and other wedding themed arrangements.

The visuals resembled a decorated honeymoon room rather than a standard railway compartment, leading many social media users to dub the train the “Suhagraat Express.”

Railway officials are examining whether existing security and access protocols were breached during the decoration process.

Social media reactions
The incident generated widespread discussion online, with reactions ranging from amusement to sharp criticism. While some users described the decorated cabin as a unique gesture for a newlywed couple, others argued that public transport should not be converted into a private celebration venue. Several users also raised concerns about security protocols after learning that a private decorator allegedly entered the train to carry out the arrangements.

Current Status
As of now, the TTE remains under suspension, a police case has reportedly been registered against the private decorator, and South Central Railway’s inquiry is continuing. Authorities have not yet announced the final outcome of the investigation or whether additional officials will face disciplinary action.
