Samajwadi Party MPs Stage Potato Protest Outside Parliament Over Farmers’ Prices
New Delhi: Members of the Samajwadi Party staged a protest outside Parliament on Tuesday, highlighting concerns over low prices received by potato farmers. According to ANI, the MPs brought sacks of potatoes to the Parliament complex and raised slogans demanding fair compensation for farmers.
The protest was led by Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, with party members displaying placards carrying messages that called for ensuring proper prices for potatoes and relief for farmers facing financial distress. The demonstrators urged the government to address the issue of declining returns for agricultural produce, particularly potatoes, which they said had severely affected farmers’ incomes.
During the day’s proceedings in the Lok Sabha, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan responded to questions related to the restructuring of the Krishonnati Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri–Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. Meanwhile, opposition MPs continued to raise slogans inside the House, accusing the Election Commission of “vote theft.” The disruptions led to the Lok Sabha being adjourned until noon.
Separately, Congress MP K. Suresh stated that the opposition intends to introduce a resolution seeking a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, provided the House functions without disruptions. He noted that the motion could not be moved earlier because the House had been repeatedly adjourned.
Suresh said that 118 opposition MPs have signed the proposed resolution, alleging partisan conduct by the Speaker after Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi was reportedly not allowed to speak in the House. The motion will be formally introduced if the House grants permission.
According to sources, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to begin the discussion on the resolution. BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Nishikant Dubey, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Bhartruhari Mahtab are likely to participate in the debate. Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) MP Chirag Paswan may also address the House, while Congress leaders including Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari, Deepender Singh Hooda, and Jothimani are expected to present arguments supporting the motion.
