Dispur: Assam mountaineer Rupamoni Gorh has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first woman from the state to scale Mount Everest as part of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police’s all-women expedition team. Her accomplishment received praise from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who called it a proud moment for the entire state.
Sharing his reaction on social media, Sarma congratulated Rupamoni Gorh for reaching the summit of the world’s highest mountain and said her achievement would motivate young people across Assam to dream bigger and strive for greater success. He described her feat as an inspiring example of determination and courage.

Rupamoni Gorh was among the members of the ITBP All-Women Everest Expedition 2026, which successfully climbed Mount Everest on May 21. According to reports, the expedition marked the first international all-women Everest mission organised by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.
The mission was launched with the aim of promoting “Nari Shakti” and encouraging greater participation of women in adventure sports and mountaineering. The summit operation reportedly began around 8 am under the leadership of Bhanita Timungpi, while Anoop Kumar served as the climbing leader. The support team was guided by noted IFMGA expert Sonam Chhiring Lama.
The 14-member expedition team included 11 women climbers along with technical and support personnel. The team approached Mount Everest through the South Col route from the Nepal side after being flagged off from New Delhi on April 19, 2026.
The ITBP also celebrated the achievement through an official statement, announcing that all 11 women climbers successfully reached the summit of Mount Everest, standing at 8,848 metres. The force described the accomplishment as a historic and proud moment for India.
