New Delhi : Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu resigned from the Union Council of Ministers on Friday. Rashtrapati Bhavan said the President accepted Bittu’s resignation on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi under Article 75(2) of the Constitution.
Bittu’s resignation follows the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure on June 21. He had represented Rajasthan in the Upper House from August 2024 to June 2026, after being nominated to fill the remainder of the term vacated by Congress leader KC Venugopal. Soon after stepping down, Bittu thanked President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for giving him the opportunity to serve in the Union government.
In a post on X, he said it had been an honour to serve the country and reaffirmed his commitment to public service, nationalism and the vision of Viksit Bharat under Modi’s leadership. His resignation comes as the BJP intensifies preparations for the Punjab Assembly polls. The party has already ruled out an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and plans to fight the election on its own.
Bittu has contested several high-profile elections in Punjab. In the 2017 Assembly polls, he fought on a Congress ticket against SAD leader Sukhbir Singh Badal and AAP’s Bhagwant Mann, finishing third. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he contested on a BJP ticket for the first time but lost to Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring by 20,942 votes.
