New Delhi: The latest round of Rajya Sabha elections held on March 16 produced significant gains for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which secured decisive victories in Bihar and Odisha, while the outcome in Haryana remained pending due to procedural disputes.
According to a report by The Hindu, the NDA achieved a clean sweep in Bihar, winning all five seats that were up for grabs. Candidates backed by the alliance, including leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies, emerged victorious after the vote count concluded. The result further consolidates the NDA’s influence in the Upper House from the state.
In Odisha, the BJP secured three out of the four Rajya Sabha seats contested in the election. The outcome marked a notable political development in the state, with reports indicating that cross-voting by some legislators contributed to the BJP’s success.
However, the results for the Haryana seat were not immediately declared. The counting process was halted after both the BJP and the Congress lodged complaints with the Election Commission regarding alleged violations of ballot secrecy during the voting process. Officials are reviewing the matter before announcing the final outcome.
These elections were part of the biennial exercise conducted to fill several Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant as the terms of existing members end in April 2026. Earlier in the election cycle, 26 candidates from different states had already been elected unopposed, leaving a smaller number of seats to be decided through voting.
The results from Bihar and Odisha are seen as strengthening the NDA’s position in the Rajya Sabha, while the unresolved Haryana contest continues to draw political attention as authorities examine the complaints raised by rival parties.
