Lucknow: A planned interaction between Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and students in Uttar Pradesh was called off after the local administration revoked permission for the event, setting off a fresh political confrontation between the Congress and the BJP just hours before the programme was scheduled to take place.
The Congress alleged that the move was a deliberate attempt to stop Gandhi from engaging with students and accused the BJP led Uttar Pradesh government of using the administration to block political activities. Party leaders claimed all necessary preparations had been completed before the permission was suddenly withdrawn, leaving organisers with no choice but to cancel the event.
The Uttar Pradesh administration, however, maintained that the decision was taken on administrative and security grounds. Officials cited law and order concerns but did not publicly suggest that the cancellation was linked to the Congress or Rahul Gandhi’s political programme.
The cancelled event was part of Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing outreach to students and young people, a campaign that has gained momentum in recent months. The Congress leader has been consistently raising issues related to competitive examinations, recruitment delays, paper leak controversies and the challenges faced by students across the country. He has repeatedly accused the Centre of failing to protect the interests of young aspirants and has called for greater accountability in the education system.
Reacting to the cancellation, Congress leaders said preventing the Leader of the Opposition from meeting students sends the wrong message in a democracy. They argued that political leaders should be free to interact with citizens, particularly young people, without unnecessary administrative hurdles.
The BJP dismissed the allegations, saying the Congress was attempting to turn a routine administrative decision into a political controversy. Party leaders accused Rahul Gandhi of using student issues for political mileage and insisted that law and order considerations cannot be ignored while granting permission for public gatherings.
The incident comes at a time when education and employment have become key political issues ahead of several crucial electoral battles. Student protests over examination irregularities, recruitment processes and paper leak cases have kept youth related concerns at the centre of political debate, with both the BJP and the Congress seeking to position themselves as champions of students’ interests.
The cancellation has now added another chapter to the growing political rivalry between the two parties. While the Congress sees it as an attempt to silence the Opposition, the BJP maintains that the administration acted within its authority. As both sides continue to trade charges, the controversy is likely to keep the spotlight on the larger debate over political freedom, student engagement and the role of the administration in handling public events.
