New Delhi : Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday demanded an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the police lathicharge on students protesting in Delhi. Gandhi said the use of force against students was unacceptable and accused the government of failing to respond to their concerns. “People are being beaten. This is completely un-Indian. The Prime Minister has not even apologised for what happened yesterday,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi, along with several Opposition MPs, met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking a discussion in Parliament on the police action against the protesters. Gandhi alleged that the Speaker told them he would first need the Centre’s approval before allowing such a debate. “Imagine this—the Speaker is saying he needs the government’s permission to hold a discussion in Parliament. He told us that openly,” Gandhi claimed.
Gandhi also demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him responsible for the police crackdown. He said Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should also resign, but argued that the Home Minister bears direct responsibility since the police function under his ministry. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav also criticised the government, alleging that it used its “private army” to suppress student protests. Drawing a comparison with Adolf Hitler’s regime, Yadav claimed the Centre had unleashed force against its own citizens instead of addressing their concerns.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said paper leaks have become increasingly common and accused successive governments of taking only symbolic action. She expressed concern over the uncertainty facing students and their families, many of whom make significant financial sacrifices to support higher education. “The future of the country’s youth is at stake. Parents take loans to educate their children, while students struggle with immense pressure and anxiety. This is a serious issue that deserves genuine attention,” she said.
