Mumbai: A decades old land dispute in Bhayander East has reached Prime Minister Narendra Modi after an 81 year old resident of Mira Road sought his intervention and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the matter.
Asgarali Vohra met Modi on September 8 and raised his complaint over around 2,810 square metres of land in Navghar, Bhayander East. Vohra says he bought the property through a registered agreement in 1989, but claims that the land was later encroached upon and that documents connected with the property were forged.
According to Vohra, the alleged encroachment took place in 2011. He has been trying to get the matter resolved through various government departments and the police for years. A police case was registered in 2015, but Vohra says the dispute remains unresolved.
The issue involves allegations against Swayam Builders and Seven Eleven Constructions. Vohra claims that the disputed property was eventually divided into two portions and that the names of the two construction companies appeared in connection with possession of the land.
The matter is also linked to BJP MLA Narendra Mehta, whom Vohra has alleged has an association with Seven Eleven Constructions. These are allegations made by Vohra and should not be treated as established findings of wrongdoing.
The dispute is currently before the court, while the administrative process is also continuing. A hearing is scheduled for September 16, when representatives of the two construction companies have reportedly been asked to appear.
Vohra says he has approached revenue authorities, the municipal administration and police officials over the years in an attempt to resolve the dispute. His latest appeal to the Prime Minister is for a central agency to investigate what he believes has been a long running failure to protect his property rights.
The meeting with Modi also carried a personal connection. Vohra and the Prime Minister were reportedly schoolmates at BN School in Vadnagar, Gujarat.
For Vohra, the meeting represents another attempt to bring attention to a property dispute that has continued for more than three decades. With the September 16 hearing approaching, the focus is now on what action authorities and the courts take next.
