Cyber Fraudsters Beaware: PM Modi Pushes States To Adopt E-Zero FIR For Faster Crackdown

New Delhi: In a major push to strengthen India’s fight against online fraud, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked all states and Union Territories to speed up the roll out of the e-Zero FIR system, a technology driven mechanism designed to help police act faster against cyber criminals and improve the chances of recovering stolen money.

The directive comes at a time when cyber fraud cases are rising sharply across the country, with thousands of victims losing money every day to scams involving fake investement schemes, phishing links, digital arrest, impersonation frauds and fraudulent online transactions.

The e-Zero FIR system is being seen as a game changer because it removes one of the biggest hurdles faced by victims delays in registering a police case. Traditionally, complaints often got stuck due to jurisdication related issues forcing victims to approach multiple police solution before FIR lodged. The system, eligible cyber fraud complaints can be automatically converted into a Zero FIR and immediately forwaded to the appropriate police station for investigation.

Officials say the initiative was launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and was initially introduced as a pilot project in Delhi. The system currently covers major cyber financial fraud cases and is linked to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal and the 1930 cybercrime helpline.

The Centre believes that quicker registration of cases could make a significant difference in tackling cybercrime. Investigators often stress that the first few hours after a fraud takes place are crucial. A rapid response can help authorities trace transactions, freeze suspicious accounts and, in some cases, recover funds before they are moved through multiple channels.

Government officials have highlighted that cybercriminals increasingly operate across state boundaries, making seamless coordination between police agencies essential. The e-Zero FIR framework is expected to improve information sharing and reduce procedural delays, allowing law enforcement agencies to respond more effectively to digital crimes.

PM Modi’s call for faster implementation signals the government’s intent to build a stronger cyber security ecosystem as India continues its rapid digital transformation. With online banking, digital payments and internet based becoming part of everyday life, authorities believe modernising cybercrime investigations is no longer an option but a necessity.

If adopted across all states, the e-Zero FIR system could significantly strengthen India’s ability to combat cyber fraud, offering victims quicker access to justice and giving law enforcement a much neded edge in the race against increasingly sophisticated cyber criminals.
