New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi set the political temperature soaring even before the Monsoon Session of Parliament got underway, taking a veiled swipe at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi by referring to a “56 year old youth” during his adress to the media on Monday.
Although Modi did not mention Rahul Gandhi by name, the remark was widely understood to be aimed at the Leader of the Opposition, who turned 56 last month. The comment quickly became one of the biggest talking points ahead of what is expected to be a stromy parliament session.
Drawing a comparison while praising India’s young innovators, the Prime Minister highlighted the achievements of a private Indian space technology company, saying its team had an average age of around 30 years. He then contrasted their accomplishments with those of a “56 year old youth,” prompting laughter among those present.
Beyond the political jibe, Modi urged MPs from both the ruling alliance and the Opposition to ensure the Monsoon Session remains productive. He said Parliament should be a forum for meaningful discussions, healthy debate and legislation that benefits the country, adding that the public expects elected representatives to work together on issues of national importance.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time when the government and the Opposition are preparing for an intense face off inside both Houses. The Congress and its INDIA bloc allies have already indicated that they will press the government on a range of issues, including inflation, unemployment, alleged examination paper leaks and the controversy surrounding donations made for the Ram Mandir.
The Opposition is also expected to seek discussions on several other matters it considers to be of public importance, setting the stage for heated debates throughout the session. The government, meanwhile, is looking to push ahead with its legislative agenda while appealing for smooth functioning of Parliament.
Political observers believe Modi’s latest dig is part of the BJP’s broader strategy of keeping the spotlight on Rahul Gandhi while reinforcing its own narrative around youth, innovation and development. Similar exchanges between the two leaders have frequently dominated political discourse in recent years, both inside Parliament and on the campaign trail.
With the Monsoon Session now underway, attention will shift from pre session rhetoric to the floor of Parliament, where both sides are expected to clash over policy, governance and accountability. Whether the session is remembered for productive lawmaking or political confrontation will largely depend on how the government and the Opposition navigate the coming weeks.
For now, however, it is the Prime Minister’s brief but pointed “56 year old youth” remark that has ensured the political battle began even before the first major debate in Parliament.
