“One Nation One Election” Could Save ₹7 Lakh Crore, Boost India GDP By 1.6%: JPC

New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal has stated that conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies and local bodies could help India save nearly ₹7 lakh crore while increasing GDP growth by up to 1.6 per cent. According to News On AIR, the remarks were made by JPC Chairperson and Lok Sabha MP P. P. Chaudhary during a press conference in Gandhinagar.

He said the proposal is aimed at improving governance efficiency by reducing the frequency of elections held across the country. As reported by News On AIR, the committee’s recommendations include synchronising Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, followed by Panchayat and Municipality polls within 100 days.

P. P. Chaudhary also noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier formed an eight-member committee under former President Ram Nath Kovind to examine the proposal. The committee reportedly spent around 186 days preparing its report before the matter was referred to the JPC.

According to News On AIR, members of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 are currently on a three-day visit to Gujarat. The committee also held discussions with senior officials, including Chief Secretary M. K. Das and DGP Dr K. L. N. Rao, in Gandhinagar.

The report stated that the JPC consists of 39 members, including representatives from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, along with the chairperson.
