On Monday, August 24, 2026, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing ahead of the 25th round of negotiations between China’s and India’s Special Representatives (SRs) regarding the boundary issue. On Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Mr. Doval will meet with Wang Yi, his SR counterpart and a member of the Politburo and Chinese Foreign Minister. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, he will also pay a visit to Han Zheng, the vise president of China.
“In-depth communication on the boundary question” will take place during the talks, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. “The talks between the Special Representatives of China and India are the main channel for negotiations between China and India on the boundary question, and also an important platform for communication between the two sides on issues of mutual interest,” spokesperson Lin Jian stated.
“China and India successfully held the 24th round of negotiations in August of last year, during which the two sides had a thorough discussion of the boundary issue and came to a number of agreements. In the spirit of the shared understanding of the leaders of the two nations to cooperatively maintain peaceful and calm border areas, the two sides will continue their in-depth communication on the boundary issue during this round of negotiations.”
Additionally, he said, the two sides would discuss regional and global challenges as well as bilateral relations. The visit gives both parties a chance to assess the relationship ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s anticipated travel to India for the September 12 BRICS Summit next month.
Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr. Xi met in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, relations have progressively improved.
When officials convened earlier this month under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on border concerns, both parties examined the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
A statement said that both sides “held detailed exchanges on issues related to boundary delimitation, border management, mechanism-building and trans-border cooperation.”
China and India decided to establish an Expert Group within the WMCC “to explore Early Harvest in boundary delimitation in India-China border areas” during the previous round of SR negotiations in August 2025.
