New Delhi: The central government is preparing to introduce legislative updates to the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The primary objective of these changes is to eliminate legal vulnerabilities that international and domestic narco networks currently exploit, according to an address by Union Home Minister Amit Shah reported by Press Trust India and published via NDTV News.
Speaking at the 10th high-level conference of the Narco-Coordination Centre (NCORD), Shah emphasized that enforcement bodies must deploy an uncompromising and ruthless strategy when targeting drug suppliers and peddlers across the country.
States Urged to Collaborate on Legal Adjustments
The upcoming revisions are being spearheaded by the Union Finance Ministry. Shah formally requested that all state governments actively participate in refining the statute by submitting their formal evaluations and recommendations directly to the Centre.
To ensure the new legal parameters are fully airtight, the Home Minister stressed that continuous, immediate intelligence sharing between state forces and central bodies is non-negotiable.
“For this, the Narcotics Control Bureau has developed several portals. I urge all chief secretaries and police chiefs to upload crime details for their respective states to these portals in a time-bound manner,” Shah remarked, stating that the central government will utilize this data to supply necessary feedback and guidance.
Statistics Show Escalating Seizure Volume and Financial Value
During the NCORD assembly, Shah shared comparative data to illustrate the expanding operational footprint and effectiveness of India’s anti-narcotics enforcement over the last two decades:
| Metric Evaluated | 2004 – 2014 Period | 2014 – 2026 Period |
| Synthetic Drug Seizures | 26 Lakh Kilograms | 1.18 Crore Kilograms |
| Estimated Economic Value | Approximately ₹40,000 Crore | Approximately ₹1.84 Lakh Crore |
According to the Home Minister, this sharp upward trajectory in both intercepted volume and overall valuation serves as tangible proof that national counter-narcotic campaigns are progressing successfully.
Driving Results Across Regional NCORD Forums
In his closing remarks to regional authorities, Shah underscored that administrative meetings must translate directly into tangible operational successes. While acknowledging that the frequency of coordination meetings has steadily grown, he noted that their true value lies in execution.
The Home Minister challenged regional leaders to strictly monitor whether previous policy decisions are being actively implemented on the ground, calling for rigorous, serious analysis during every subsequent review cycle to ensure real success against drug trafficking.
