Narela Mercedes Crash: 70 Year Old Woman Killed, Cop’s Son Arrested After Head On Collision

New Delhi: A morning walk turned fatal for a 70 year old woman in Delhi’s Narela on Saturday after a Mercedes crashed into a WagonR, leaving her trapped between the vehicles. The woman, identified as Urmila, died at the spot.

The crash took place at around 8 am near Himalaya Apartments in the Mamurpur area of Narela. According to police, the Mercedes collided head on with the WagonR. The impact pushed the WagonR into a parked three wheeler loading van, where Urmila was caught between the vehicles.

The WagonR driver suffered minor injuries in the crash. Police and emergency personnel reached the spot soon after the accident, while Urmila’s body was later sent for a post mortem examination.

The Mercedes driver, identified as Shubham, was arrested at the scene, police said. His father is a Sub-Inspector with the Haryana Police.

Mercedes Was Borrowed From A Friend

Police said the Mercedes did not belong to Shubham. He had reportedly borrowed the luxury car from a friend a day before the accident. What led to the collision is now at the centre of the police investigation.

Some eyewitnesses claimed that Shubham was driving at high speed and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. A liquor bottle was also reportedly seen inside the Mercedes after the crash.

However, police have not confirmed that the driver was drunk. A medical examination has been conducted and the report is awaited. That report will help establish whether alcohol was present in his system when the accident occurred.

Police Begin Investigation

Police have started examining the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the condition of the vehicles and the sequence of events immediately before the collision.

A case is being registered under provisions relating to death by negligence and other applicable offences. Further sections and action will depend on the findings of the investigation and the medical report.

The damaged Mercedes and WagonR are also expected to form part of the investigation as police work to establish how the two vehicles collided.

For the family of Urmila, however, the investigation comes after an irreversible loss. A routine morning in Narela ended with her death, while police now face the task of establishing exactly what happened in the moments before the crash.

The probe is continuing, and the awaited medical report could become a key piece of evidence in determining whether alcohol or any other factor contributed to the fatal collision.
