Naga-Kuki Clashes Erupt in Manipur After Civilian Ambush

Violence broke out between Naga and Kuki groups in Manipur’s Senapati district following an ambush on civilians, intensifying already fragile ethnic tensions in the region.

The confrontation was reported from T Khullen village, where gunfire erupted amid rising hostilities between the two communities. Local inputs suggest that the exchange of fire created panic among residents, though there is no official confirmation yet regarding casualties or the full scale of the violence.

The latest unrest follows an incident on April 18, when two Naga civilians were ambushed. The attack sparked widespread anger, leading to shutdown calls across Naga-inhabited areas. Civil society organisations and insurgent groups from both sides have since traded accusations, further escalating tensions.

Reports indicate that the clashes may be linked to attempts to enforce shutdowns and road blockades called by the United Naga Council. These protests were organised in response to the ambush, which was allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki insurgents.

The situation remains volatile, with security forces deployed to contain the unrest. Authorities have yet to issue a formal statement on the incident, and further details are awaited.

The violence has also disrupted normal life across several parts of Manipur. Educational institutions, markets, and public transport services remained shut in multiple districts, including both valley and hill regions.

Meanwhile, protests in other areas of the state have added to the tension. In Imphal West district, a torch rally defying curfew reportedly turned violent, leading to clashes between demonstrators and security personnel.

In a separate development, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand’s visit to Wangjing in Thoubal district triggered protests, with demonstrators attempting to block his convoy. Security forces reportedly used tear gas and opened fire to disperse the crowd.

The recent घटनाएं underscore the continuing instability in Manipur, where long-standing territorial and political disputes between Naga and Kuki communities have frequently led to violence. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
