Mumbai: A promotional marketing campaign on social media escalated into a significant crowd management crisis at the Infiniti Mall in Malad, forcing law enforcement to intervene to ensure public safety. The chaos unfolded after a clothing showroom uploaded a viral video advertisement offering an extreme discount sale, claiming that merchandise would be available for just ₹1.
However, the promotional offer featured a strict compliance catch: it asserted that only the initial 100 to 125 patrons arriving at the venue would be eligible to access the discounted rates.
Shop Shutters Locked as Hundreds Jam Concourse
The online marketing campaign quickly backfired due to an overwhelming public response. Hundreds of eager shoppers swarmed the shopping center, bottlenecking the tight corridor directly outside the commercial establishment.
The turnout grew so intense that the showroom staff found themselves physically unable to lift the security shutters to open for business. Videos documenting the massive, tightly packed gathering rapidly circulated across multiple social media platforms, triggering widespread anxiety among netizens regarding poor crowd control and the immediate risk of a stampede.
Police Regulate Situation and Disperse Shoppers
In response to the deteriorating scenario, local police personnel rushed to the location to manage the gathering and secure the premises. Authorities later clarified that the alarming visuals on social media did not represent the environment of the entire complex. While the narrow corridor directly in front of the clothing outlet was highly congested, the remaining zones of the mall were mostly unoccupied and continuing normal operations.
To systematically dissolve the bottleneck, the store management utilized a microphone to broadcast repeated public announcements informing the crowd that the showroom would officially remain closed for the rest of the day due to the safety hazards. Following the cancellation of the event, the gathered individuals gradually left the area. Speaking to Mid-Day, Senior Inspector Jaiwant Pawar confirmed that the environment had been fully stabilized and brought under control without any major injuries or negative incidents.
