Meghalaya Coal Mine Explosion: 16 Dead, Several Trapped in East Jaintia Hills Blast

At least sixteen people have been killed and several others are feared trapped following an explosion at a suspected illegal coal mine in Thangsku village, East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, on Thursday, police confirmed.

Rescue teams comprising the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police personnel, and local administration officials are currently conducting search and rescue operations at the site.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikas Kumar confirmed the incident, stating that the explosion occurred in the Thangsku (Thangskai) area on Thursday, trapping several labourers inside the coal mine. “SDRF, police, and local administration engaged in search and rescue operations. So far, 16 bodies have been recovered. One person received burn injuries,” said SP Vikas Kumar.

Authorities continue their efforts to locate and rescue those still trapped inside the mine as the situation remains under assessment.
