New Delhi : Former Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar was cremated with full state honours in Baramati on Thursday. Political leaders, family members and thousands of supporters gathered to bid him a final farewell. Pawar’s body, draped in the national flag, was brought from his native village Katewadi to Baramati for the last rites. His sons, Parth Pawar and Jay Pawar, lit the funeral pyre and performed the cremation rituals amid a solemn atmosphere.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah paid his last respects at the funeral, joining senior leaders and party workers who lined up to honour the veteran politician. Police and state officials accorded Pawar ceremonial honours as his cortege moved through the town. Ajit Pawar (66) died on Wednesday morning after a chartered Learjet crashed near the Baramati airstrip, about 100 km from Pune. The aircraft went down shortly after approach, killing everyone on board. Two pilots, a flight attendant and Pawar’s personal security officer were also killed in the accident.
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, accompanied by his wife and son Amit, actor Riteish Deshmukh and several other prominent figures, visited Pawar’s Katewadi residence to pay their last respects. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis paid tribute to his deputy Ajit Pawar by laying a wreath during the final rites in Baramati. The last rites rituals are being conducted at the Vidya Pratisthan ground in Baramati.
Fresh visuals have surfaced from the residence of Captain Sumit Kapoor, the pilot of the aircraft that tragically crashed in Baramati while carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. The atmosphere at his home remains tense and emotional as family members and neighbours process the devastating news.
