A first-year law student in Tarn Taran district of Punjab allegedly shot dead a female classmate inside their classroom on Monday before turning the weapon on himself, police said. The incident left students in shock and raised serious questions about campus security.
The accused was identified as Prince Raj, while the victim was named as Sandeep Kaur. Both were first-year law students and classmates, aged around 19-20 years. Sandeep Kaur died on the spot, while Prince Raj was taken to hospital in critical condition, police confirmed.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagbir Singh said Prince opened fire on Sandeep inside the classroom, resulting in her death, and subsequently shot himself as well.
An investigation has been launched to ascertain the motive behind the killing that occurred at the college situated in Usma village, the police officer said. The class had not yet commenced when the incident took place, the police official added.
CCTV footage from the college premises captured Prince, Sandeep, and another female student in the classroom. Several other students were also present at the time.
The footage shows Prince suddenly rising from his desk and shooting Sandeep. He then fired at his own head and collapsed on the floor. The female student seated beside Sandeep stood up in shock and checked on Kaur, who remained motionless. A few students were seen entering the classroom after hearing the gunshots but fled upon seeing Sandeep.

Sandeep’s mother, Harjinder Kaur, said she received a call from college authorities requesting her to come immediately. “I was not told that she (Sandeep) was shot,” Harjinder told reporters, adding that upon reaching the college, she found her daughter lying motionless.
She raised concerns about how a student could bring a weapon onto college premises. Sandeep was a resident of Naushehra Pannuan village, while Prince Raj belonged to Mallian village in Jalandhar district.
The incident was recorded on camera, with footage showing Prince Raj entering the classroom around 9:15 am. Later in the video, two girls occupy the last bench while Raj sits ahead of them. Kaur is seen standing when Raj gets up, retrieves a pistol from his bag, and shoots her in the head. Raj then shoots himself in the head.
Police said the reason behind Raj killing Kaur remains unknown. A case has been registered, and an investigation is in progress.
Tarn Taran SSP Surinder Lamba said the pistol used in the crime has been recovered from the scene. A thorough investigation is underway, and police will examine how the accused obtained the firearm and how he managed to bring the weapon onto college premises, he added.
