Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta submitted his resignation on Thursday, less than nine months after being sworn into office. Gupta had taken oath as the third Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on July 18, 2025.
His brief tenure coincided with growing political unrest across the Union Territory. Civil society groups, including the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, have been staging sustained protests demanding statehood, Sixth Schedule constitutional protections, and job reservations for local residents.
Who Is Kavinder Gupta?
Before assuming charge as Ladakh’s LG, Gupta held prominent positions in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. He served as the state’s last Deputy Chief Minister and also previously held the post of Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Vidhan Sabha.
In a separate development on the same day, West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose also put in his papers, according to news agency PTI, citing official sources at Raj Bhavan. Bose had been in office for approximately three and a half years. His resignation comes ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections in West Bengal.
