Ranchi: The situation in Ranchi turned tense on Monday as protesting students broke through police barricades while marching towards the Jharkhand Assembly. Police used water cannons and later resorted to lathi charge as the protesters tried to move past the security cordon.
The confrontation took place as the student protest entered its 17th day. A large number of students had gathered in the state capital for the planned Vidhan Sabha Gherao, with the march bringing heightened security across several parts of Ranchi.
Police had put up several barricades along the route leading towards the Assembly to stop the protesters from getting closer to the high security area. But as the march moved ahead, groups of students managed to cross the barriers, forcing the police to step in.
Videos from the protest site showed students climbing over and pushing aside barricades as the crowd moved forward. Police then brought in water cannons in an attempt to disperse the protesters and prevent them from advancing further.
The situation became more heated when some protesters again tried to cross the security line. Police responded with a lathi charge, leading to a chaotic scene as students moved away from the immediate area.
Security has been tightened across Ranchi since morning. Barricades and barbed wire fencing have been placed at sensitive points, particularly around the Assembly area. Police personnel have been deployed in large numbers to control the crowd and prevent the march from reaching the Assembly premises.
The administration had also taken precautionary measures ahead of the protest. Schools in Ranchi were closed on Monday because of concerns over the demonstration and possible disruption in the city.
Despite the confrontation, student leaders have appealed to protesters to remain calm and avoid violence. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato also urged demonstrators to maintain peace during the march.
For now, the situation remains tense around the protest route, with students continuing to press forward and security forces trying to hold the barricaded areas. The immediate challenge for the administration is to prevent the standoff from turning into a larger clash while keeping the situation under control.
The protest has now reached a crucial point, with the students march and the police response continuing to draw attention across Ranchi.
