Heavy overnight rainfall has triggered severe flash floods in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, bringing normal life to a complete halt on Sunday, July 19, 2026. According to reports, more than 100 mm of rain lashed the region in a short span, causing rivers and streams to overflow and inundating low-lying areas.
The worst impact was seen in Rajouri town, where the Darhali River breached its flood protection wall near Bela Colony. Floodwaters surged into residential colonies and the new bus stand, sweeping away hundreds of vehicles and causing extensive damage to public and private property. Many homes were submerged, roads turned into rivers, and critical infrastructure including bridges and drainage systems suffered major setbacks.
Authorities confirmed that rescue teams comprising police, army personnel, and local volunteers have shifted hundreds of residents to safer locations. One woman has been reported missing, while fatalities have also been recorded in Rajouri and neighbouring Poonch district amid the deluge. Continuous downpours have hampered rescue and relief operations, with weather agencies issuing warnings to people to stay away from riverbanks and low-lying zones.
The flash floods have severely disrupted road connectivity, markets, and essential services. Schools, offices, and public transport remained shut as waterlogging and debris blocked major routes. Power and communication lines were also affected in several pockets.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is scheduled to visit Jammu to review the situation and oversee relief efforts. The administration has assured full support, including financial aid for damaged houses and property, and has urged citizens to remain vigilant.
This incident highlights the increasing vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events, often linked to climate change and unplanned urbanization. Local residents expressed anguish over recurring floods, calling for stronger embankments and better early-warning systems.
As relief operations continue, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of affected families and restoring normalcy at the earliest. The India Meteorological Department has forecast more rain in the coming days, keeping authorities on high alert across the Jammu division.
