Patna : Anant Kumar Singh, the newly elected Janata Dal (United) legislator from the Mokama constituency, took his oath of office in the Bihar Legislative Assembly despite being incarcerated in Beur Jail in connection with a high-profile murder case on Tuesday.
Anant Singh, a controversial figure and seasoned politician, was escorted from prison to the state assembly to participate in the ceremony after receiving special permission from the Patna Civil Court. The court order allowed him temporary parole strictly for the oath-taking, after which he returned to custody under tight security.

The politician, who has dominated Mokama politics for more than a decade, was arrested before the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections in connection with the October 30 killing of Dularchand Yadav, a supporter of the Jan Suraaj Party, during campaign clashes. Police have identified Singh as a principal accused in the case, and he has been unable to secure bail since his detention.
Arriving at the Assembly in a prison vehicle, Singh completed the oath of office and then offered his respects to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, whom he regards as his mentor, by touching the state leader’s feet in a traditional gesture of reverence.
Before returning to jail, Singh addressed journalists briefly, asserting his innocence and expressing his belief that justice would ultimately prevail. He also reiterated his connection with his constituency, stating that development work in Mokama continued despite his imprisonment.
Singh’s victory in the Mokama seat was decisive; he won by a substantial margin of more than 28,000 votes, defeating the Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Veena Devi in the 2025 assembly polls.
The oath-taking marks a rare and dramatic moment in Bihar politics, with Singh resuming official duties while his legal battles continue. His legislative membership is now formalized, but his future remains tied to ongoing court proceedings in the murder case.
