IndiGo Becomes First Indian Airline With Over 1,000 Women Pilots

New Delhi: India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has announced that it now employs more than 1,000 women pilots, becoming the first airline in the country to reach this milestone. According to a report, the announcement was made to mark International Women’s Day, highlighting the growing participation of women in the aviation industry.
In a statement released by the airline, women pilots currently account for about 17.5 per cent of IndiGo’s total pilot workforce. The company noted that this figure is more than three times the global average, underlining the significant presence of women in its cockpit operations.
The airline also highlighted broader gender diversity within its organisation. Women now represent over 45 per cent of IndiGo’s overall workforce, reflecting the company’s efforts to encourage inclusivity across different roles.
Beyond pilot roles, women employees are actively involved across several operational and corporate departments. According to the airline, women make up more than 30 per cent of airport operations staff, nearly 25 per cent of the Operations Control Centre workforce, and over 20 per cent of employees in finance. In addition, women constitute more than 15 per cent of the workforce in digital functions and hold over 23 per cent of leadership positions within the organisation.
Commenting on the achievement, Sukhjit Singh Pasricha, Group Chief Human Resources Officer at IndiGo, stated that the airline remains committed to providing more opportunities for talented women in aviation. He emphasised that the milestone reflects the company’s continuing efforts to promote diversity and encourage women to pursue careers across various roles in the sector.
The development highlights the increasing representation of women in aviation in India, an industry that has historically been dominated by men. With the milestone of over 1,000 women pilots, IndiGo said it aims to continue fostering an inclusive work environment and supporting the aspirations of women professionals across the aviation ecosystem.
