Indian Railways: Upgraded reservation system from August

A new Passenger Reservation System (PRS) will be introduced in August, two months from now replacing the older platform that has been operational since 1986.

This move has been brought into fight the persistent issue of system overload and hang times. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav took stock of the new systems at Rail Bhawan along with Ministers of State for Railways V. Somanna and Ravneet Singh Bittu.

Big upgrade after 40 years

The outgoing reservation system will be replaced with a newer, more modern system infused with AI technologies and a higher capacity to handle foot fall. Post the introduction of the internet based reservation in 2002, a whopping 88% of tickets are now booked online. Visiting reservation counters is a thing of the past now.

This push is a part of the railways project to make RailOne the final destination for all passengers. Around 10 lakh tickets are booked daily, including reserved and unreserved. RailOne aims to be the one destination for booking and cancelling tickets, raising complaints, checking waitlists, etc.

2026 – Year of the AI

With AI increasingly being present everywhere, RailOne too isn’t missing out on the hype train. The AI based waitlist prediction will help passengers estimate the chances of a waitlisted ticket getting confirmed.

From August, the Railways hope that the ticket booking experience becomes faster, efficient and seamless for millions of users.
