New Delhi : India on Saturday strongly hit back at Pakistan Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for his remarks on Prime Minister Narendra Modi receiving Seychelles’ “Guardian of the Blue Horizon” Presidential Distinction. Government sources called Asif “mentally unstable” and accused him of making “silly comments” on issues he knows little about.
Clearly, he has no day job and passes time by making silly comments on matters of which he has little knowledge. Envy is always a bad motivation, particularly so from someone steeped in hate speech,” government sources said. The reaction came after Asif questioned the honour given to Prime Minister Modi during his recent visit to Seychelles. The Pakistan minister called it an “engineered recognition” and claimed it had been created in a hurry before Modi’s visit.
However, the Seychelles government rejected these claims. In a statement, the Office of the President of Seychelles said the Order of the Guardian of the Blue Horizon had been created under the country’s National Honours Act and was approved before Modi arrived in the island nation. The Seychelles government said the award recognises exceptional work in protecting the oceans and promoting the blue economy. It also clarified that the document circulating online was only an internal draft that had been shared by mistake before final proofreading. It said the final official citation presented during the ceremony had no such errors.
He became the first person to receive the award after Seychelles revised its national honours system. Accepting the honour, Modi thanked the people and government of Seychelles and dedicated it to countries working together to deal with climate change. In November 2025, Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration criticised Asif after he reportedly threatened military action against Afghanistan. Noorullah Noori, Afghanistan’s Minister of Borders and Tribal Affairs, had then described him as a “mentally ill” person.
After India’s Operation Sindoor, Asif had also claimed in an interview that Pakistani forces had shot down five Indian fighter jets. But when asked for proof, he reportedly referred to social media posts and did not provide any official evidence.
