India Resumes Tourist Visa Services for Bangladesh as New Envoy Dinesh Trivedi Assumes Office in Dhaka

Dhaka: India’s newly appointed High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, officially took charge on Thursday and announced the restoration of regular tourist visa services for Bangladeshi citizens from June 28, bringing to an end a suspension that had lasted for nearly two years.
Earlier in the day, Trivedi presented his credentials to Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban before visiting the Indian Visa Application Centre in Dhaka. During his visit, he reviewed the functioning of the centre, where a large number of applicants had gathered.
“I am very happy to announce that we are resuming our normal visa applications for tourist visas, which can be submitted from Sunday, the 28th of June 2026,” Trivedi said. “We hope that this will further strengthen the people-to-people ties between our two sovereign nations.”
Medical and emergency visas will continue to be processed on humanitarian grounds through five visa centres located in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna and Sylhet. Authorities also plan to extend these services to additional cities in the future.
The decision to restore tourist visa services is being seen as a move towards normalising bilateral relations under Bangladesh’s new political leadership. Visa operations had been significantly reduced during the tenure of Muhammad Yunus following attacks on Indian diplomatic missions.

The announcement also comes after India accorded Trivedi the equivalent rank of a Union Cabinet Minister in the national Table of Precedence for ceremonial purposes, a rare honour reflecting the importance New Delhi places on its ties with Dhaka.
Previously, Indian diplomat Dr L.M. Singhvi, who served as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom during the 1990s, had also been granted cabinet rank.
