India Blocks 300 Illegal Betting Sites Amid Online Gaming Crackdown

New Delhi: The Indian government has escalated its crackdown on illegal online betting and gambling platforms by blocking around 300 websites and mobile applications, according to a report by The Times of India.

The latest action is part of an ongoing enforcement drive that has gained momentum following the implementation of the Online Gaming Act, which provides a structured framework to regulate online gaming and restrict unlawful real-money betting activities.

Official sources indicated that the banned platforms included a wide range of illegal services such as online sports betting websites, digital casinos offering games like slots and roulette, and betting exchanges operating as peer-to-peer marketplaces. Additionally, authorities have also taken action against satta and matka networks, along with real-money card and casino gaming applications.

The report further noted that the government has significantly expanded its efforts in recent months, with a total of approximately 8,400 illegal betting and gambling platforms blocked so far. A substantial number of these were taken down after the introduction of the Online Gaming Act, underscoring the government’s focus on tightening regulatory oversight.

Officials have reiterated that the objective behind these measures is to create a safer and more accountable online gaming ecosystem while protecting users from the risks associated with illegal betting operations.

The continued crackdown reflects the Centre’s broader strategy to curb digital financial misconduct and ensure compliance with laws governing online gaming and betting activities in India.
