Raigad: Thousands of LPG cylinders belonging to an HP Gas bottling plant were swept away after heavy rainfall triggered flooding in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, raising safety concerns and prompting authorities to begin recovery efforts.
The incident occurred in the Rasayani Industrial area, where an overflowing flood channel inundated the HP Gas bottling facility. Officials said nearly 3,000 LPG cylinders, including both filled and empty units, were carried away by the strong floodwaters into the Patalganga river. No casualities or injuries were reported immediately, but authorities have launched an operation to locate and recover the drifting cylinders.
Videos showing dozens of gas cylinders floating downstream quickly spread across social media, drawing widespread public attention and concern over potential risks. Officials are monitoring the situation closely and assessing whether any of the cylinders pose a danger to nearby communities or river traffic.
The flooding followed intense rainfall across parts of Raigad, where water levels in local rivers and drainage channels rose rapidly, affecting several low-lying industrial and residential areas. The HP Gas plant was among the facilities impacted as floodwaters entered the premises.
Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed assessment of the damage after floodwaters recede. Recovery teams are working to trace the missing cylinders and ensure they are safely retrieved to prevent any accidental hazards.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of industrial installations during extreme weather events and underscores the need for stronger flood preparedness measures at facilities handling hazardous materials. With the monsoon continuing across Maharashtra, officials have urged industries located in flood-prone areas to review safety protocols and emergency response plans.
