Shajapur: In a heartbreaking incident that has raised fresh concerns over wildlife safety, 13 blackbucks were found dead inside an agricultural well in Shajapur district of Madhya Pradesh. Forest officials believe the protected animals may have accidentally fallen into the open well while trying to escape a stray dog. The carcass of the dog was also recovered from the same well.
The incident came to light after a farmer’s family noticed a strong foul smell while visiting their field in Khardounkala village under Kalapipal tehsil. Upon looking inside the well, they discovered the decomposed carcasses and immediately alerted village authorities, who informed the Forest Department and local police.
According to preliminary findings, the herd is believed to have been running at high speed after being chased by a stray dog. Officials suspect the animals plunged into the open well through a damaged section of its protective parapet. The dog is also believed to have fallen into the well during the chase. However, authorities have said the exact cause of the deaths will be confirmed only after the postmortem reports and completion of the investigation.
The Forest Department has cordoned off the area and launched a detailed inquiry to determine whether negligence, including inadequate protection around the well, contributed to the tragedy. Since blackbucks are protected under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, officials followed mandatory legal procedures before removing the carcasses. The postmortem examination was conducted in the presence of revenue officials, after which all the carcasses were cremated according to protocol.
The Kalapipal Shujalpur region is known for its large blackbuck population, with herds frequently entering nearby farmlands in search of food. In recent months, the Forest Department had relocated hundreds of blackbucks to other sanctuaries to manage the growing population and reduce crop damage. Wildlife experts say the latest incident highlights the need to secure open wells in wildlife habitats to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials are expected to release a detailed report after the forensic and veterinary examinations are completed.
