Honeymoon Murder Accused Granted Bail in Meghalaya Case
In a significant development in the Meghalaya honeymoon murder case, a local court granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the killing of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi during their honeymoon last year. The court order was issued on April 28, citing procedural lapses in her arrest by the Meghalaya Police and delays in the trial proceedings.
Sonam’s brother, Govind, made it clear that the family would not welcome her back home following her release. Speaking to reporters, he stated that he had visited his sister in jail solely for paperwork formalities and had already informed Raja’s brother about the purpose of the meeting. “We won’t keep her in the house right now; that’s not possible,” Govind said. He added that if his parents decided to bring her home, he would leave the house himself. He noted that the court order was still pending and that the family had not yet engaged a private lawyer.
Raja’s mother, Uma, expressed strong dismay over the bail decision and renewed the family’s demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. “We want a CBI investigation. The mistakes made should be brought to light through a CBI probe. How did Sonam come out? When she committed such a serious crime, how can she get bail?” she questioned. The victim’s family also voiced concerns that granting bail to the other accused—Raj Kushwaha, Vishal, and Akash—could pose a threat to their safety.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said the Meghalaya Police would respect the court’s order while continuing with the prosecution. “We respect the Honourable Court’s order. The investigation and trial will proceed as per law, and we remain confident in the evidence already placed before the court,” Syiem told news agency ANI.

The case dates back to last year when Raja Raghuvanshi was murdered while on honeymoon in Meghalaya, with Sonam accused of being the main conspirator. The victim’s family has repeatedly criticised the handling of the investigation by state police and pushed for central agency intervention to ensure a thorough inquiry.
Govind further indicated that any further legal recourse against the bail should be pursued by Raja’s family through the High Court. As the situation develops, questions linger over Sonam’s immediate plans after release and the broader implications for the ongoing trial.
