Himachal Pradesh Weather Update: IMD Issues Orange Alert For Snow and Rain
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is preparing for a significant weather disruption as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an “Orange Alert” for the region. According to a report by DD News, a potent western disturbance is expected to trigger widespread heavy rain and snowfall across the hill state over the next 48 hours, starting Thursday, March 19, 2026.
The IMD weather warning specifically highlights the higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Kullu districts, which are anticipated to receive substantial snow accumulations. Meanwhile, lower and mid-hill areas, including the state capital Shimla, are likely to experience heavy thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds and hail. As reported by DD News, the sudden shift in weather patterns is expected to cause a sharp decline in temperatures across the state.

Local authorities have responded by issuing safety advisories to both residents and tourists. According to DD News, the state administration has cautioned against traveling to high-altitude areas due to the increased risk of landslides and avalanches triggered by the fresh precipitation. Furthermore, disruptions to essential services, including electricity and water supply, are anticipated in remote villages. Several link roads in the tribal districts have already been closed as a precautionary measure.
The India Meteorological Department also warned of potential damage to standing crops, particularly fruit orchards in the apple-growing belts, due to the predicted hailstorms. Farmers have been advised to take necessary precautions to minimize losses. While the spell of rain and snow is expected to provide much-needed moisture for the rabi crops, the intensity of the storm remains a primary concern for the state’s disaster management teams, who remain on standby to handle any emergencies.
