Rakesh Mehta, a 75-year-old former chief secretary of Delhi, committed suicide at his Noida home. Police have found a note in which he stated that he held no one accountable for his choice and mentioned health and mental distress.
Mehta, an Indian Administrative Service officer from the 1975 batch, was the Chief Secretary of Delhi under former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Mehta has been residing in a rented apartment in Kendriya Vihar-2 Society in Sector 82 of Noida for around five years. A one-page English-language note was found at the scene by the police.
Mehta, a native of Dehradun, was married to Sumanti Mehta, a former Delhi cadre IAS official. She was visiting their son, who is doing a PhD in Dehradun, at the time of the tragedy. After her marriage, the couple’s daughter moved to London.
His wife contacted the society’s security guard to check on the flat on Sunday afternoon after she couldn’t get through to him despite calling from Dehradun many times. The cops were notified when there was no answer. When the police arrived, they discovered Mehta dead. His family later arrived in Noida.
On Monday, his final ceremonies were carried out in Delhi.
Mehta had been dealing with a number of health issues, including diabetes, hypertension, and hand and limb tremors, according to the note. These illnesses had caused him a great deal of stress. Mehta held a number of positions with the Delhi government, including Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
In 2007, he was appointed Chief Secretary of Delhi, a position he held for over three years. In the nation’s capital, he was recognized with managing the implementation of a number of significant transportation, electrical, and public infrastructure projects.
During his tenure, Delhi hosted the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
