A heart-wrenching video circulating on social media has moved thousands to tears, showing the final moments of farewell for Harish Rana, a Ghaziabad resident who has spent nearly 13 years in an unconscious, bedridden state. His life support system has been removed, and a specialised medical team at AIIMS Delhi is now carrying out the passive euthanasia process in accordance with a Supreme Court order.
Harish was shifted from his home to AIIMS Delhi, where doctors are proceeding with the medically supervised end-of-life procedure with dignity, as directed by the court. The Supreme Court, after reviewing AIIMS’ detailed medical report and finding no possibility of recovery, granted the family’s petition for passive euthanasia so that Harish could be relieved of his prolonged suffering.
The Viral Video That Broke the Internet
The approximately 22-second clip has struck an emotional chord across social media platforms. In the video, Harish can be seen lying on a hospital bed, his eyes fixed upward. His face carries a visible sadness, yet there is an unusual calm about him as if he is at peace with what is to come.

What Is Passive Euthanasia?
Euthanasia refers to the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment for a person suffering from a serious and incurable condition, in order to relieve them of unbearable pain. It is broadly categorised into two types active and passive. In passive euthanasia, medical treatment or life support is gradually withdrawn, allowing the patient to reach the natural end of life without artificial intervention.

His family left no stone unturned in caring for him over the years. However, doctors consistently maintained that his chances of recovery had been virtually exhausted. With no hope of improvement in sight, the family approached the court seeking permission for euthanasia. The Supreme Court, taking into account both the medical reports and the circumstances, granted permission for passive euthanasia allowing Harish to finally be freed from the suffering he had silently endured for over a decade.
