Father Allegedly Demands Rs 40 Lakh for Daughter’s Marriage, Then Stabs Her Inside Bengaluru College

Bengaluru: A marriage proposal took a horrifying turn in Bengaluru after a 35 year old assistant professor was allegedly stabbed by her own father inside the college where she worked, following a dispute over a rs 40 lakh demand linked to her marriage. The accused, identified as Nagendra, has been arrested, while the victim, Lakshmi Durga, remains under medical treatment after sustaining serious injuries.

According to police, the incident took place on July 25 at a private college in Bengaluru. Investigators said Nagendra arrived at the campus around 3 pm and informed staff that he wanted to meet his daughter. Believing it to be a routine family visit, college authorities allowed him into the Head of Department’s chamber, where Lakshmi Durga was present. Moments later, he allegedly attacked her with a knife.

The police investigation has revealed that the attack was allegedly triggered by a financial dispute over Lakshmi Durga’s upcoming marriage. Officers said Nagendra had demanded rs 40 lakh from his daughter’s prospective groom as part of the marriage arrangement. When Lakshmi Durga opposed the demand and reportedly refused to support it, an argument followed, culminating in the violent assault.

College staff and others present rushed to intervene after hearing her cries for help. Lakshmi Durga was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital, where she is undergoing treatment for serious injuries. Doctors have not publicly disclosed further details about her condition.

Police quickly detained Nagendra after the attack and later placed him under arrest. A criminal case has been registered, and investigators are examining the sequence of events, the alleged motive, and statements from witnesses as part of the ongoing probe. Authorities have not announced any additional arrests or charges beyond those already filed.

The incident has sparked widespread shock, with many expressing concern over violence within families and the continued social pressures surrounding marriage and financial demands.
