New Delhi: The scars of the recent violence at Jantar Mantar are no longer visible only on broken helmets and blood stained police uniforms. For the families of injured Delhi Police personnel, the incident has become a painful memory that continues to unfold at home, as they wait for their loved ones to recover and seek accountability for the attacks.
On Friday, relatives of several injured police personnel shared their experiences, saying the officers had left home expecting routine law and order duty but instead found themselves caught in one of the capital’s most violent protest confrontations in recent years. Displaying damaged protective gear and uniforms soaked in blood, the families urged the public not to overlook the sacrifices made by those deployed on the front lines. According to their accounts, several officers suffered head injuries and fractures after being attacked with stones, sticks and other objects during the clashes.
Among them was the family of a Delhi Police sub inspector, who said the officer was surrounded by a mob and seriously injured while trying to control the situation. His daughter said he lost consciousness after suffering multiple blows and required emergency medical treatment. She described the emotional impact the incident has had on the family, saying they now worry every time he reports for duty.
The violence erupted during protests at Jantar Mantar over the alleged examination paper leak issue. As tensions escalated, clashes broke out between protesters and police, leaving both security personnel and demonstrators injured. Delhi Police has said that more than 100 of its personnel were hurt in the violence and that multiple FIRs have been registered. Investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to identify those allegedly involved in attacking police personnel.
At the same time, the police response has also come under scrutiny. Several protesters have alleged that excessive force, including pellet guns, was used to disperse the crowd. The issue has reached the Supreme Court, which has directed authorities to ensure appropriate medical treatment for injured protesters while legal proceedings continue.
With investigations still underway, both sides continue to present sharply different accounts of what happened that day. While police families are demanding justice for officers injured in the line of duty, protesters are calling for an independent examination of the force used to control the demonstration.
As authorities continue to investigate the violence, the events at Jantar Mantar have evolved into more than a law and order issue. They have become a reminder of the human cost of public confrontations, affecting not only those on the streets but also the families waiting anxiously at home.
