Poll Body to Unveil Election Dates for Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has scheduled a press conference this afternoon at 4 pm to formally announce the dates for assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry, according to a report by NDTV.
This development follows indications that the poll panel was preparing to notify the election schedule for these states and the UT. Once the announcement is made, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) will immediately take effect in the respective regions. The MCC imposes strict guidelines on political activities, prohibiting parties and candidates from making new announcements aimed at influencing voters or using government resources for electoral gains. Administrative control over state machinery in these areas will shift to the oversight of the Election Commission to ensure a level playing field.
In West Bengal, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of the Trinamool Congress seeks a fourth successive term, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has mounted a strong challenge, aiming to displace the incumbent government. The stakes are high in this politically charged state, known for its intense electoral contests.

The press conference, called by the Election Commission, will provide the official timeline, including nomination deadlines, polling dates, and counting day, though specific dates were not detailed ahead of the event. Media personnel have been invited to attend the briefing, which is expected to clarify the full electoral roadmap for these five regions.
This announcement comes amid preparations for state-level polls separate from the national Lok Sabha elections (which were held earlier in 2024 across seven phases from April 19 to June 1, with results on June 4). The focus now shifts to these assembly contests, which will test the political strength of major parties in eastern, southern, and northeastern India.
The ECI’s move underscores its commitment to timely and transparent conduct of elections, ensuring compliance with constitutional provisions and electoral laws. Further details, including any phased voting if applicable, are anticipated during the 4 pm briefing.
