Drunk Driver Kills Young Zepto Delivery Agent in Overnight Collision

In the early hours of Saturday, a fatal accident in west Delhi claimed the life of a 25-year-old delivery worker when a speeding car driven by an intoxicated motorist struck his electric scooter from behind near the Subhash Nagar Metro station traffic intersection.

Delhi Police reported that the incident occurred around 3:20 a.m. The victim, identified as Hem Shankar, a resident of Raghubir Nagar, was employed by the quick commerce platform Zepto and was en route to complete a delivery during his night shift from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Eyewitness accounts indicated that a Hyundai Verna car, approaching from the Janakpuri side, overtook several vehicles at high speed before veering left and colliding with the scooter. The impact flung Shankar off his vehicle and dragged him under the car for several metres until the vehicle crashed into a metallic pole and a drain cover, coming to a halt.

Passersby quickly intervened, apprehending the car’s driver and his companion before they could escape on foot, abandoning the damaged vehicle at the scene. Police arrived shortly after and took both individuals into custody.

The driver was identified as Mohit Kumar, 27, a resident of Najafgarh who works as a contractor with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. His companion was Sanchit Dhar, also 27. Medical tests confirmed Kumar was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Bhaskar Darade stated that Kumar was arrested, and a case was registered at Tilak Nagar police station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 281 and 106 for rash driving and causing death by negligence, along with Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act for drunken driving.

The first information report was filed based on the statement of eyewitness Neeraj Kumar Pandey, who had just alighted from a cab near the metro station and witnessed the entire sequence. Shankar was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Shankar, the sole breadwinner for his family, is survived by his mother Rukmani and two brothers. Relatives noted that he had been supporting his youngest brother Sameer’s education through his Zepto job, which he held for the past year.

A Zepto spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the incident, offering condolences to the family and confirming full cooperation with Tilak Nagar police. The company highlighted that all delivery partners are provided with accidental insurance coverage of ₹10 lakh.

This latest tragedy underscores ongoing concerns over drunken driving and road safety in the capital’s busy thoroughfares.
