Senior Tamil Nadu Police Officer Faces Backlash Over Laughter Before Briefing on Coimbatore Child Rape-Murder Case

COIMBATORE: A senior police official in Tamil Nadu has come under intense public criticism following the circulation of a video that captured her laughing shortly before leading a media briefing on the horrific rape and murder of a young girl.

Inspector General of Police (West Zone) R V Ramya Bharathi drew widespread condemnation after the clip, filmed ahead of her interaction with reporters regarding the sexual assault and killing of a child, spread rapidly across social media platforms. In the footage, the officer appears relaxed and laughing while engaging casually with others, just moments before addressing the press on the grave matter.

The incident has fueled outrage online, with many users expressing dismay over what they see as a lack of appropriate solemnity in the face of such a disturbing crime. One social media comment that resonated widely noted, “The entire state is grieving over the brutal murder of a child, and senior officials are seen laughing before the briefing.”

This controversy has unfolded against the backdrop of significant public anger in Tamil Nadu over the abduction, rape, and murder of a 10-year-old girl in Sulur near Coimbatore. The case has sparked protests and drawn sharp political criticism directed at the ruling TVK government.

On the same day, Tamil Nadu industries minister S Keerthana also faced similar accusations of insensitivity after another video showed her smiling during a media interaction concerning the case. When questioned about the murder following an official meeting, the minister stated she would only address “administrative questions.” BJP leaders condemned her demeanor as dismissive. In response, Keerthana clarified that her expression had been misinterpreted for political gain and that the smile was unrelated to the crime itself.
