A Chandigarh Police head constable was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head at his government residence, and his 18-year-old son has been arrested in connection with the killing.
Nitin Singh, who worked in the accounts branch at police headquarters, was discovered at his home in Sector 22 on Friday. A countrymade pistol was recovered from the scene. The incident came a day after an argument between Singh and his son, Armaan.
According to the preliminary investigation, Armaan had been pressing his parents to allow him to marry his girlfriend without delay. His parents insisted that he wait until he turned 21, the legal age for men in India. Armaan also demanded that the girl be brought to their house and asked for money to meet various needs. Both requests were refused.
Police said that after the shooting, Armaan allegedly tried to harm his mother by grabbing her neck. She managed to break free, ran to the rooftop, and alerted neighbours. A neighbour reported that Armaan initially attempted to claim that an outsider had entered the house and attacked his father.
Armaan was detained for questioning and later arrested. Officers noted that he showed no remorse for the incident.
The teenager was already out on bail in an earlier case. Earlier this year, while driving a friend’s Mahindra Thar, he was involved in a collision that killed two brothers riding a motorcycle in Manimajra. He had been arrested in that matter and later released on bail.
The case has left the local police community and residents of Sector 22 shaken. Investigators continue to examine the sequence of events that turned a family disagreement into a fatal outcome inside a police officer’s own home.
