Blinkit Mumbai Facility Licence Suspended After Hygiene Violations Found

Authorities have suspended the food licence of Blink Commerce Pvt Ltd, which operates the quick-commerce platform Blinkit, following an inspection at its Malad West facility in Mumbai. Food safety officers identified multiple serious breaches of hygiene and safety standards during the check.

The inspection revealed a large-scale cockroach infestation at the premises. Food items were stored on rusted racks, and cold storage areas showed inadequate cleanliness. Officers also discovered stocks of expired or spoiled packaged food products, along with instances of improperly stored and tampered goods.

These findings prompted the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration to take action against the facility’s operating licence. The company did not issue an immediate response to inquiries about the suspension.

In a related development, the Bombay High Court directed another major e-commerce firm to hand over expired and perished goods from one of its warehouses for proper disposal. The court also set a timeline for the regulatory body to respond to a challenge against a separate licence suspension at that facility.

The action against the Blinkit site underscores ongoing scrutiny of food handling and storage practices at quick-commerce and e-commerce warehouses. Regulators continue to monitor compliance with standards designed to protect consumers from contaminated or unsafe products.

Such inspections aim to ensure that facilities maintaining food stocks meet required cleanliness, storage, and expiry-date protocols. Violations involving pest infestations or expired items raise particular concerns about potential health risks to customers receiving deliveries.

The suspension means the affected facility cannot continue food-related operations under its previous licence until regulatory requirements are addressed and any necessary corrective measures are verified. Officials have not yet indicated a timeline for possible reinstatement.

This episode forms part of broader efforts by food safety authorities to enforce standards across distribution networks that supply household essentials and ready-to-consume items. Consumers rely on these platforms for convenience, making consistent adherence to hygiene rules essential for public confidence.

Further updates on remedial steps or additional inspections may follow as the regulatory process continues.
