A diplomatic impasse has unfolded along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Mankachar sector, leaving nine Bangladeshi nationals stranded in the no-man’s land that separates the two countries. The situation remains unresolved, with authorities on both sides engaged in ongoing efforts to address the matter.
According to sources, the Border Guard Bangladesh has declined to take back its citizens despite efforts to resolve the issue. A flag meeting between the Border Security Force and their Bangladeshi counterparts took place in an attempt to find a solution, but it yielded no immediate outcome. Officials indicated that another round of discussions was scheduled for the same day to continue negotiations.
The incident has heightened tensions in the border area. The nine individuals were discovered in the neutral zone on Sunday, prompting swift action from Indian security personnel. In video footage that has circulated widely, one of the stranded men can be heard stating that they are Bangladeshi citizens who had entered India seeking work opportunities. He emphasized that they possess documentation to verify their nationality and expressed a strong reluctance to remain in India, declaring that they would not return even under extreme circumstances.

Other recordings show the group in visible distress, with several members appearing emotional amid uncertainty about their immediate future. The development comes amid broader efforts by Indian forces to manage cross-border movements. In recent days, the Border Security Force has turned back several individuals attempting unauthorized entry, while Assam Police and border guards jointly prevented 21 infiltrators from crossing over the past week.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commended the coordinated actions of state police and the Border Security Force in curbing such attempts. In a public statement, he highlighted the joint success in identifying and stopping the infiltrators, underscoring a continued commitment to border security through multiple strategies. Sarma has repeatedly stressed the importance of maintaining Assam as free from illegal infiltration and ensuring robust protection along international boundaries shared with neighboring regions.
The current standoff underscores the persistent challenges associated with border management between the two nations. As negotiations proceed, the nine individuals remain in the no-man’s land, their situation a focal point of attention for security agencies on both sides. Authorities continue to monitor the area closely while pursuing a diplomatic resolution.
