Indian Diplomat Discovered Dead at Bangladesh Mission in Chattogram

Chattogram, Bangladesh — A staff member of India’s diplomatic mission in Bangladesh’s port city of Chattogram was found dead inside the mission premises on Tuesday morning, local police reported.

The deceased has been identified as Naren Dhar, who was serving as an Assistant Protocol Officer at the Indian mission. According to police, his body was discovered early on May 20, 2026, in front of a bathroom door on the second floor of the old visa centre building within the diplomatic compound.

Chattogram police spokesman Aminur Rashid confirmed the identity and position of the official, describing him as being in his late 30s. “We have been told he was Naren Dhar and serving as the assistant protocol officer at the mission,” Rashid told reporters. Police initially suspected the death might have resulted from a cardiac arrest, though the exact cause will only be determined after a post-mortem examination.

Authorities responded promptly to the incident. Officers reached the scene soon after receiving information in the morning and, following necessary formalities for a foreign national attached to a diplomatic mission, transported the body to the state-run Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

As of now, neither the Indian High Commission in Dhaka nor the Assistant High Commission in Chattogram has issued any public statement regarding the death. Police indicated that Dhar hailed from Chandigarh.

The incident has drawn attention to security and health protocols within diplomatic facilities, though officials have refrained from speculating beyond the available facts pending the autopsy report. Further details are expected once forensic examinations are completed.

This marks a somber development in India-Bangladesh diplomatic relations, as both nations maintain close ties with active consular operations in major cities like Chattogram, a key economic hub in southeastern Bangladesh.
