Ahmedabad Plane Crash : One Year After AI 171 Tragedy, Final Crash Report Still Two Months Away

New Delhi : One year after the tragic Air India Flight 171 crash, investigators are still working to complete the final report into the disaster. Sources familiar with the probe said the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is expected to need around two more months before submitting its findings. They maintained that the investigation is progressing as planned and emphasized that the final report will present a complete picture of what happened.

According to the sources, all key findings will be made public, with no effort to withhold information from the public. Air India’s Boeing 747-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, killing 260 people in the world’s deadliest air disaster in a decade. Amid growing speculation over the findings, a source said all aspects of the investigation would be disclosed once the process is complete. Nothing will be kept in the dark.

All details will be brought into the public domain, the source told. According to the source, no objections have been raised by GE Aerospace, whose engines remain a key area of focus in the investigation. Another senior source monitoring the probe said the Ministry of Civil Aviation has been regularly reviewing the progress of the investigation, with top officials being periodically briefed on developments related to the probe and the preparation of the final report.

However, they noted that there is no international obligation under International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) norms requiring investigators to issue such an interim update. The broader strain on the aviation sector arising from the regional conflict has had an impact on stakeholders connected to the probe, the source said, adding that investigators should not be blamed for circumstances beyond their control.
